A new Painting in two steps

I did this painting on my iPad in Artrage at dinner tonight. First I sketched the face gesturally with pastels and then painted over it with oils. I was looking across the table at my husband who was not holding still! (No photo involved. Drawn by hand on iPad screen, a "finger-painting")

The lover one is the original, but it didn't look good on this computer. It's hard getting the colors to translate right.

Yellow Lady's Slipper

I did this "painting" with Sketchpad Pro (by Autodesk) on my iPad. I did NOT touch it up on photoshop, this is straight off the iPad--I wanted it to be an untouched iPad picture. I spent several weeks working on it because Sketchpad pro is very slow (for me; I'm a newbie.) Sometimes, I used a pogo stylus, but mostly, I used my finger. I "painted" it from scratch, no photo was used. I did however, use a photo as a reference. The photo I used is one I took myself many years ago in the pouring rain. My mother stood over me with an umbrella. I did not paint all the droplets that were in the photo--that would have taken literally years to do. I just put a few representative ones in. See that floating leaf at the bottom? I tried and tried and it would not write there. So--too bad. The floating leaf is now part of the picture. C'est la vie!

Collaboration Splotch Monster with Steve Loya

My Splotch Monster Collaboration with Steve Loya is at the top, his splotch is underneath. Click image to view larger. Click here to see Willie's Splotch monster from this same splotch. (I love his wings and beak.)

Anti-Homage to the Emerald Ash Borer

This is a "finger-painting" in "brushes" on my iPad of the view from the window of my studio. The tree in the foreground is a white ash which is dying as a result of the emerald ash borer. The painting was made at night, and the lower dead branches appeared bright, whereas the upper ones were dark. Click image to view larger.

Homeless and Hungry #100726-1313

I thought I would continue the theme I seem to be going with of homelessness. If hunger goes too far . . .

Pen and ink with watercolor, click to view a little larger.

Taking Homes from the Homeless #100721A

Sam and Keith are talking to Dale, a homeless man in Detroit, about where he sleeps in the winter (an empty deserted factory) and how he eats and stays warm. This is a companion piece to the one I posted yesterday. It's on the facing page.

Taking Homes from the Homeless

If anyone knows Detroit, this is down near Eastern Market--it was a few years go. The bundle under the bridge is Dale's belongings. Now it is my understnding they made a walking trail there, so where is DALE? Where is he living? It's cold in Detroit in the winter--and hot in the summer.

Pen and ink and water color.

A watercolor sketch of the deck at Crosswinds Restuarant in Whitehall, Michigan, made while eating there on vacation. It did not fit entirely on the scanner. See earlier version here.

Digital Iris Painting

Iris, by Mary Stebbins Tait. I've been trying to learn to do art on
the iPad, because I took it with me camping. Today, I am home--came
home a week early due to medical issues. So I did a digital smudge
painting on the real computer, with the cintique tablet--I've got a
lot more control! I can do much finer detail!!! LOL! (What a
difference). I wonder if they wil have software for the iPad that
comes closer to this.

Lonely Street, 3 AM

"Lonely Street, 3 AM," is done in gouache on arches 140 lb watercolor paper. It's from the homeless series I'm working on. The paper is is bigger than the size of my scanner. so it's slightly blurred because it was lifted off the platen and also, slightly less purple than it really is. I don't know why the scanner didn't pick up the purple.

If you click on the painting, it will enlarge significantly.
